DRSCCA Solo School moves online!

In lieu of a Solo School at Schoolcraft this year, we’re moving everything online and making the classes free! In addition to the usual Solo Drivers School and the Safety and Kart Steward class, we’re offering more classes for critical autocross event volunteer positions, including Registration, Timing and Scoring, and Event Chair duties!

You can register for these online classes on MotorsportReg here. Participants that sign up will be sent a Zoom meeting link with a meeting password. If there are any questions or comments, feel free to direct them to me, John Li, at jli@jleez.net.

Class descriptions and scheduling

Wednesday May 20th, 7:30-8:30pm EST
Online Event Chair Bootcamp

If you are interested in what goes on behind the scenes as an Event Chair, this class is for you! We’ll go over Event Budgets, Sanction forms, Audit forms, and the responsibilities of the Event Chair(s) in filling out core volunteer positions and site logistics. DRSCCA has a dire need to for Event Chairs, so if you’re interested in making a big impact to the club, please consider signing up!

Thursday May 21th, 7:30-8:30pm EST
Online Solo Drivers School

In lieu of a Solo School with a classroom session and a driving session, we’re taking the driving school portion completely online. This will be an hour long discussion on what makes a driver fast when it comes to car control and driving lines. This is not going to be a simple lecture; there will be a “breakout room” discussion component to the school, so come prepared with a mic so you can discuss concepts with your fellow students.

Experienced drivers are welcome to participate in addition to novices. The driving “riddles” are something that I think everyone can get into, and we’ll delve a bit into video and data analysis as well.

Tuesday May 26th, 7:30-8:30pm EST
Online Solo and Kart Safety School

Safety Stewards ensure that our events are safe for all participants involved. Getting licensed as an SCCA Safety Steward involves taking a classroom session, a requirement which this online class will fulfill, and serving as a deputy Safety Steward for two events. This class also contains a Kart Safety Steward course, which is the start of getting licensed as a Kart Steward. For Junior Karts to run at our events, we need a Chief Kart Safety Steward in addition to a Chief Safety Steward.

Wednesday May 27th, 7:30-8:30pm EST
Online Timing and Scoring Class

Curious about what the timing crew does in the timing truck during heats? Does the idea of sitting down for your entire work assignment appeal to you? This is one of the most critical volunteer functions at an autocross event, and we’re always looking for more willing volunteers to help in this area. We’ll go over the basics of timing and audit, as well as a brief introduction to AXWare, the timing software on our timing computers.

Thursday May 28th, 7:30-8:30pm EST
Online Registration Class

If you’re someone that always shows up early to an autocross, and would like the opportunity to get your work assignment taken care of early as well, consider helping out at Registration! We’ll go over the basics of working at Registration, from the documentation that you need to check from the entrants, to a brief overview of MotorsportReg and how it is used in Registration and setting up the event.
